Foundation Degree in Pastoral Mission
What does the programme cover?
The programme has academic, spiritual and pastoral elements. It will provide you with a solid academic foundation which feeds into work-based learning that brings together theory and practice, so that the theology studied can have direct practical benefits in how you conduct your pastoral activities. In addition to the weekly study session you will be assisted through regular meetings with a programme tutor, a work-based mentor, and have the option of receiving regular spiritual direction or prayer guidance.
You take three modules in each year of the two-year full-time course. The Foundation Degree is scheduled to allow you to attend classes and undertake your study around your work commitments, since those work activities are also contributing to your learning. The modules explore central areas of Catholic belief and culture and their connection with pastoral mission, especially in the local Church. Aspects of this include why the Church exists, her mission, the purpose of humanity and our relationship with God, scripture, the person of Christ, Catholic devotions and parish spirituality, liturgy, canon law and ethics, and catechetics.
You will focus in particular on the role of the laity in the Church’s mission, including the practicalities of pastoral work in parishes: the Parish Pastoral Council, working with volunteers, the place of communication and technology and parish administration and fundraising. The modules will also develop your skills in communication, numeracy, use of Information Technology, reflection on practice, and problem solving.
