Programme of Study

BA Abrahamic Religions

What does the programme cover?

The first year (or part-time equivalent) introduces the beliefs and practices of each of the three religions. You will also work on the philosophy of religion alongside students on other programmes in both theology and philosophy, who come to the subject with different perspectives.

In the second year, you will engage with the sacred texts which play an important part in all three religions, and also with the common theme of philosophical and religious ethics. You begin to explore the relations between the religions. You can shape your degree through your choice of options: you might choose one of the languages important in the sacred texts or explore the interface of psychology or sociology with religion. Typically, the options available could include Sociology of Religion; Psychology of Religion; Biblical Hebrew; New Testament Greek; Qur’anic Arabic, or Religious Experience and Spirituality. Not all modules may be available every year.

In the final year you will build on your understanding of sacred texts to look at spirituality and mysticism in the Abrahamic faiths, and also engage with belief and unbelief – a central issue for all three religions in a predominantly secular culture. You will complete a dissertation on a relevant subject chosen by you and agreed by your tutor.
