Information for visiting students

Why study at Heythrop?

Heythrop College is the specialist Theology and Philosophy College within the University of London and combines its own small and specialist facilities with the wider University community. Heythrop started life in 1614 as a Jesuit foundation and now welcomes staff and students from all faiths or no faith background. It has a strong mission to facilitate and support interfaith dialogue. More information on the history of the College can be found here. Heythrop College has an excellent Library for the study of Philosophy and Theology, with a large collection of historic texts.

How to plan your programme of study

Heythrop offers a range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes in Theology, Philosophy and joint programmes with Psychology, as well as study at Masters degree level. Prospective students are advised to read the Heythrop Programme Specifications very carefully before making a choice. (Please note that the Programme Specifications are in the process of being updated, so there may be changes.)

The number of credits you will gain per module/half module is made clear in the Heythrop Programme Specifications and follow the links for further information. BE CAREFUL - a whole Heythrop Module is worth 30 credits to British students, and a half Module is worth 15. HOWEVER to calculate the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) values you need to divide by 2: a full Module is worth 15 ECTS credits to you and a half Module is worth 7.5. These are the numbers you should put in your Learning Agreement. If in doubt be sure to consult your Erasmus Coordinator, and also the Heythrop Erasmus Coordinator, Dr Gemma Simmonds.

Also be careful to check whether any modules have prerequisites, which may mean you are not eligible to take them. You may be able to demonstrate that previous study at your home institution has covered the same requirements as a prerequisite module, and you need to discuss this with the ERASMUS Coordinator Dr Gemma Simmonds.

When you have decided which modules you wish to take you should consult Dr Gemma Simmonds to ensure that this choice is academically appropriate and can be undertaken within the timetable. When your programme has been agreed you should complete a Heythrop ECTS Learning Agreement, get it authorised by your Erasmus Coordinator, and submit it together with your Application Form.

In your first week you will confirm your programme of study with Dr Gemma Simmonds. After you complete your period of study with us you will be sent a transcript showing your achievements (note: transcripts can ONLY be released after the Examination Board has met in June).

Application process and deadlines

You should apply through your home institution in the academic year before you wish to study with us. Your institution will have its own procedures so please check with your ERASMUS Coordinator. Our closing date for applications is 30 June for students joining us for the whole academic year (September to June) or for the Michaelmas Term (September to December) and 31 October for students wishing to join us in the Lent Term only (January to March).

Please check term dates before you apply.

Important Note: Heythrop does not operate a semester system.  Terms in which teaching takes place are from September to December (Michalemas) and January to March (Lent).  The Summer Term (May to mid-June) is for revision classes and examinations only.  Modules are assessed by coursework and either examination or essay or a choice between the two.  While you may submit essays early, no negotiation is possible on examination dates which begin in May.  You will need to verify from your module description how the module is normally assessed.

Student support and non academic activities

Heythrop College offers a strong communal atmosphere. The College has its own Students’ Union that offers support, guidance and social facilities such as clubs and societies. In addition, students are entitled to join in the activities of the University of London Students’ Union, providing advice, social and sporting opportunities for meeting students from across the world.

Heythrop College provides student support and is small enough to provide a caring friendly atmosphere. All students attend an induction to learn about the College. Students are allocated a named tutor whom they can contact to discuss any issues or concerns.

ERASMUS students can also contact the Student Development Manager who can give advice on a range of issues.

Where is Heythrop College?

Heythrop is based in the heart of Kensington, which is a vibrant and fashionable part of London. The location is ideal for students, being very close to the cultural areas of South Kensington, with its world famous museums such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. The Albert Hall, famous for classical and pop concerts, Kensington Palace, the home of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and Kensington Gardens, are a few minutes walk away. The nearby underground (Tube) stations and buses quickly link Kensington with the rest of London and beyond. Kensington has a number of clubs, bars and restaurants, all of which can provide good social opportunities. The shopping is good too!!!

If you are offered a place at Heythrop it may be possible for you to be given assistance finding accommodation. In the first instance all queries should be directed to the Conference and Accommodation office, full details at Accommodation. It may not always be possible to offer Erasmus students accommodation on campus, since the college’s Alban Hall can be heavily oversubscribed, but details of other hostels in London are available.
