Theology in Four Voices
“Theology in Four Voices” is a model developed by the ARCS project for understanding theology which demonstrates the interconnectedness and intrinsic unity of the various subdisciplines of theology. This model of theology is invaluable in reading and renewing faith practices, and returns us to a ‘holistic’ understanding of theology.
ARCS names the four voices as follows:
Espoused Theology
What we say we believe / what motivates our practice
Operant Theology
What the practices themselves actually disclose as our lived out theology
Normative Theology
The theology of our tradition / church - eg. scripture, doctrine
Formal Theology
The theology of ‘professional’ theologians.
