Heythrop Students' Union

As a Heythrop Student you are automatically a member of Heythrop Students’ Union (HSU). The Union is managed by a team of eleven officers, elected annually. Officers have individual responsibilities, including student welfare, entertainments, societies, communications, development, campaigns and mature students. The team is headed up by a sabbatical President, a student who has either completed a degree or has taken a year out in order to fill this full-time position.

As a member of the HSU you are entitled to join a society (All are free of charge, a rare phenomenon at university.) There are societies to cater for a wide range of interests; drama, music, comedy, art, debating, martial arts, religion and poetry to name some. If however you can’t find a society you like the look of you can easily start your own!

The Union organises events throughout the year, from Freshers’ Week all the way through to an annual Summer Ball. Previous Summer balls have been at London Zoo, and under Shakespeare’s Globe, as we take advantage of our small size and plan better and interesting parties than other colleges. The HSU also manages the student social space in the basement of the college.  There are four main social spaces for students to relax in. The Lounge, the largest of the social spaces is where you go to play pool, decorate our chalk walk and listen to the jukebox, and there is free tea and coffee available. The Quiet Room is exactly as it sounds, quiet, and students can relax or read here in a calmer environment. Our TV Room is equipped with a wide screen plasma, a DVD Player and sofas. Finally, the Other Room; This room isn’t open all the time, and is used as a music and society room. Societies tend to use it during the day, and residents can book it for music practice in the evening. The HSU also runs a shop from the office in the basement, where Heythrop branded merchandise is available.

The Lion, the Heythrop student newspaper, is produced entirely by students, and provides a fantastic forum for debate, information and expression. Students can all write for The Lion, and those particularly interested can work towards joining its editorial board.

The Union represents the student body through College meetings and committees, and more widely to ULU and the NUS. It has loudly campaigned on several issues and has received local and national press attention for doing so.
The Union is there to help you, support you and to entertain you throughout your time at Heythrop.

University of London Union (ULU)

All Heythrop College students are members of the University of London Union (ULU). ULU’s HQ is in Bloomsbury – a bus or tube ride away – where the facilities on offer include bars and cafés and a health club. You can make as much use of ULU as you want: many students never go there. Sport, though, is an area where a small College struggles to get decent teams together. ULU, on the other hand, in 2011 had 26 sports clubs! All the more exotic sports will welcome novices: this is a good chance to meet students from other colleges and learn a new, possibly expensive sport like rowing more cheaply than you will ever be able to do again!
