Heythrop Students' Union

As a Heythrop student, you are automatically a member of Heythrop Students’ Union (HSU). The Union is managed by a team of eleven Executive officers, elected annually by the Student Body. Officers have individual responsibilities, including student welfare, events, activities, communications, development, and campaigns. The team is headed up by a sabbatical President and Vice President, who have completed their degrees or have taken a year out in order to fill a full-time position.
Events
The Union organizes events throughout the year, from Freshers’ Week all the way through to the annual Summer Ball. Previous Summer Balls have been at London Zoo and Shakespeare’s Globe, as we take advantage of our small size and plan better and more interesting parties than other colleges.
Societies
All HSU societies are free to join, unlike at other institutions. We offer a wide range of activities such as drama, music, art, debating, martial arts, meditation, film and choir. If however you can’t find a society you like the look of, you can easily start your own!
Student spaces
The HSU also manages student space in the basement of the College. There are three main social spaces for students to relax in: The Common Room is the largest, where you can go to play pool, decorate our chalk wall and listen to the jukebox, with a kitchenette and free tea and coffee available. The Quiet Room is, well, quiet. Students can relax or read here in a calmer environment. Finally, the Other Room, this room isn’t open all the time, but is booked by societies to practice, meet or to socialize. Students can book it for music practice in the evening. The HSU also runs a shop, where Heythrop-branded merchandise is available. The HSU office is next to The Common Room, should you need us.
University of London Union
All Heythrop College students are members of the University of London Union (ULU). ULU’s HQ is in Bloomsbury – a bus or tube ride away – where the facilities on offer include bars and cafés and a health club. You can make as much use of ULU as you want: many students never go there. Sport, though, is an area where a small College struggles to get decent teams together. ULU, on the other hand, in 2011 had 26 sports clubs! All the more exotic sports will welcome novices: this is a good chance to meet students from other colleges and learn a new, possibly expensive sport like rowing more cheaply than you will ever be able to do again!
All Heythrop students also have access to all the facilities available at the ULU building, such as meeting space, legal advice, careers service, gym and swimming pool.
Student newspaper
The Lion, the Heythrop student newspaper, is produced entirely by students, and provides a fantastic forum for debate, information and expression. All of our students can write for The Lion, and those that are particularly interested can work towards joining its editorial board. Find out more at theheythroplion.co.uk.
Representation
The Union represents the student body through College meetings and committees, and more widely in ULU (the University of London Union) and the NUS (National Union of Students). All Heythrop Students are automatically members of NUS and ULU through our affiliation with them. It has loudly campaigned on several issues and has received local and national press attention for doing so.
