Brief description of this programme
The degree provides students with the possibility of studying core elements in academic psychology along with a range of options including psychology of religion, psychoanalysis and other topics related to core elements. The degree also includes the study of philosophy as provided by the College’s well-established programmes for the Federal BA in Philosophy and the College-based BAs in Philosophy & Theology and Philosophy, Religion & Ethics.
The degree is particularly suitable for students who have studied Psychology and/or Philosophy at A-level, and who want to pursue their interests without being committed to an eventual professional/academic training in psychology, for which the Graduate Basis for registration of the British Psychological Society is a requirement. The degree suits those who want a broader understanding of the central problems and who will, therefore, see the strength in looking at related areas from two different but related disciplines.
Graduates of the programme will be well-placed to prepare for teaching or to pursue further study in either of the subject areas of the programme. For graduates with this degree who decide to pursue further academic studies (or academic/professional training) in psychology, there are pathways to the Graduate Basis for Registration involving sitting the Society's Qualifying Examination, or taking a conversion course (typically a Graduate Diploma or Masters degree) of which there are currently 37 listed on the BPS website. On at least some of these courses there is the possibility of APCL (Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning).
The skills of analysis, communication and engagement with current issues developed through the programme are valued by employers in many fields.
