Centre for Eastern Christianity's Conference Report, March 2011
'Eastern and Western Christian Perspectives on Islam and Christian-Muslim relations'
March 2011
This two-day Conference brought together experts on Islam and Christian-Muslim relations from a number of Churches, Latin and Eastern Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant, to share experience, mainly from Europe and the Middle East, and current research on Christian theological thought on Islam and how this impacts upon the actual relationship between Islam and Christianity. This research-led academic exchange built on the significant expertise and network established by members of the Centre for Eastern Christianity in this research area, as demonstrated particularly in the publication `Christian Responses to Islam: Muslim-Christian Relations in the Modern World', Anthony O'Mahony (co-ed.), Manchester University Press, 2008 & `Eastern Christianity in the modern Middle East' A.O'Mahony (co-ed.), London, Routledge, 2010.
The Conference presented recent research work on Christian approaches to Islam and Christian-Muslim relations, and facilitated the transfer of learning, knowledge and experience, which in turn allowed, the important goal of the cultivation and deepening of Christian understanding, in a religious, political and pastoral context, of Islam and Muslim-Christian relations. It is anticipated that the proceedings of the Conference will be published in late 2011 or 2012
